The brief was to extend in to the garden to create a modern kitchen dining and living space. The clients have teenage children so, despite the challenging site constraints, a second snug space was required to the rear in order to accommodate the different social activities of family life. The design exploits the end-of-terrace condition to create a large wrap-around extension with an abundance of natural light.
The house is relatively thin and therefore the kitchen, dining and living functions are stacked sequentially front to back in the new space. Clerestory glazing extends to the full length of the extension sitting atop an exposed brick wall, an expression of the original brick boundary wall, which runs the full length to the back of the garden. The ground plane has been lowered and the garden excavated to create a perfectly level indoor-outdoor floor finish which, despite making a small garden smaller in plan, makes the outdoor space feel larger and more connected.
The roof is expressed as a thin plane of steel construction floating above the glazing. Doors are a high quality thin-framed aluminium system with solar control glass. The space is fitted out with a custom kitchen designed by Proctor & Shaw, tailored to the clients requirements.
