Snug House

A full house refurbishment with rear and side extensions to a substantial semi-detached house in Herne Hill, South London. The property was in need of a full programme of refurbishment. The ground floor at the rear of the house is comprehensively remodelled and extended to create a modern open-plan kitchen and dining room with a cosy timber-clad and snug space.

The semi-detached home occupies a wider than typical plot with generous reception rooms to the front of the house. In response the design developed as three new, more intimate, spaces that mediate the relationship of the house with the garden. A highly glazed kitchen extension to the side with dramatic height and light, an intimate timber lined snug with box window framing views into the garden, and a framed terrace that captures the western sun in the Summer.

The new extensions are built in a dark charcoal brick which subtly contrasts with the existing London stock. Extensive glasswork highlights the connections between old and new and defines the functional elements in plan.
