Rift House

An extension, folded in plan and section, is split off from the original house with an innovative roof light and structural detail. A  ‘pin wheel’ of existing beams and cross walls are removed or re-supported on an asymmetrical cranked steel beam structure buried hermetically in existing masonry finishes.

In a moment of architectural drama, new and old volumes are sheared apart from each other to leave behind a light filled ‘rift’ at the new social heart of the dwelling.

The extensions are generously glazed with box windows and are clad in a composite board material formed from FSC certified timber and recycled plastic, a 95% recycled product.
